Devotional: ‘Listen to Jesus’

Standard

Matthew 17:1 Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. 2 As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance changed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothing became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. 4 Peter blurted out, “Lord, this is wonderful! If you want me to, I’ll make three shrines, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 But even as he said it, a bright cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him. Listen to him.” 6 The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground. 7 Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said, “don’t be afraid.” 8 And when they looked, they saw only Jesus with them.

Periodically I have a parent share with me that their young child thinks that I am God. That is so bizarre that I hesitate to even share it. Yet at the same time it’s easy to understand how a very young child might become confused. All they know about God is pretty much wrapped up in what they experience at church. Unfortunately a portion of a child’s perspective of God remains with many Christians throughout their life. To them – ‘the church is a place we go to once a week to do spiritual things. Once we leave church, we go back into the real world.’ Yet that’s not how God intends for it to be.

Worship is not something we do only once a week at a particular place in town. Worship is to be the central theme of everything we do. The disciples were privileged to see what they saw, but the primary lesson the Lord wanted them to learn was that the same Jesus who was with them on the mountain was the same Jesus who was with them in the valley. What happened on the Mount of Transfiguration was that the disciples got a glimpse of the glory of Christ that had been there all the time.

As the disciples were trying to process all of this, they heard a voice from heaven that said – “This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him. Listen to him”.

Listen to Him. Glorify Him. Dwell with Him. It’s all about Him.
