Prophetic Words Concerning America?

This morning I am working on our Wednesday night study in the book of Daniel. As I was studying, I came across this quote from David Jeremiah’s book, ‘The Handwriting on the Wall.’ (Thomas Nelson Publishing, pg 62)

Quote:

“When the thirteen colonies were still a part of England, Professor Alexander Tyler wrote about the fall of the Athenian republic over a thousand years ago. He said:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the pubic treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world’s great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, form apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage.”

End quote.

Kind of scary isn’t it!  Note – “a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by dictatorship.”  Banks – insurance companies – now car companies – wonder what’s next in our ‘Bail-out’?

  1. I just read something similar the other day from McGee:

The historian Gibbon gives five reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. The
first step down is the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis of
human society. Second, higher and higher taxes, the spending of public money for free bread
and circuses for the populace. Third, the mad craze for pleasure, sports becoming every year
more exciting, more brutal, more immoral. Fourth, the building of great armaments when the
great enemy is within — the decay of individual responsibility. And fifth, the decay of religion,
fading into mere form, losing touch with life, losing power to guide the people. These were the
downward steps that Rome took, Greece took, and which all the great nations of the past have
    taken.
If God should call America into court today and specify His charges against us, where
    would He begin?

This was an excerpt from “America Needs a Declaration of Dependence” written in the 1960’s by Dr. J. Vernon McGee. This free resource is available for download at Through the The Bible – http://www.ttb.org

Our country is currently following that cycle. I’d say we are somewhere around “selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy” and quickly moving to dependency if we aren’t there already.

This quote needs to be spread far and wide.
