Devotional: ‘The Supernatural Love of the Saints’

Standard

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Daily the church gathered together to listen to the apostles teach the things Christ had taught them. Among the things the apostles taught was the importance of Christlike love. We know that because of how the early Christians related to each other. Many were willing to deny themselves of the luxuries of this world so that they might have the resources necessary to meet the needs of others. As a result, the early church had a tremendous impact upon those around them. Scripture says that even the non-believing looked upon them with favor and daily the lost were coming to Christ for salvation.

Devotional: ‘Unconditional Love’

Suppose there were two men who had been enemies for decades. So deep was their division that when one man entered a room, the other man left. But then suppose one day one of the men showed up at the other man’s doorstep and in his hand was a towel and a basin. Humbly he would ask if he might be allowed to come in for a few moments; and after entering into the man’s home, he would then fill the basin with water and ask for permission to wash his enemy’s feet. Though the man would be shocked at what was happening, he would have to recognize that something significant had taken place in this man’s life. What kind of impact might do you suppose this would have upon their relationship? What kind of impact might do you suppose this would have upon their surrounding community? What kind of impact do you suppose this would have upon the local churches?

Devotional: ‘For God So Loved the World’

Standard

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Suppose you wanted to test a runner’s speed – what would you do? You would have him run a race. Suppose you wanted to test a weightlifter’s strength – what would you do? You would have him to lift some heavy object. Suppose you wanted to test the measure of someone’s love – what would you do? You would challenge him to love the unlovable.

Devotional: ‘Because – God is Love’

On the night before His crucifixion, scripture says that Jesus took a towel and a basin of water and began to wash His disciples’ feet. (see John 13) As He did so, Simon Peter asked – “Lord, dost thou wash my feet?” (John 13:6) In other words – Why is our Master acting like He is our servant?”

Why did Jesus do what He did? Many believe that it was a lesson on the importance of humility. Without a doubt, it was an unbelievable act of self-denial for the Creator to serve the created. Yet I believe that there was another reason for Christ’s actions. I believe that Jesus was trying to reveal to us a part of the nature of God. We read from the Bible- “…God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Love is an expression of God’s eternal essence.

Devotional: ‘The Distinguishing Mark of a Christian’

John 13:1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Jesus did an amazing thing just before His arrest and crucifixion. Scripture says that He humbled Himself before His disciples and washed their dirty feet. Historians teach us that this was something for a common slave to do and certainly not someone whom others called their Master. Yet the Creator chose to serve His creation. Devotional: ‘Because They Love a Fellow Over There’

Standard

The evangelist Dwight L. Moody once said – “Show me a church where there is love, and I will show you a church that is a power in the community. In Chicago a few years ago a little boy attended a Sunday school I know of. When his parents moved to another part of the city the little fellow still attended the same Sunday school, although it meant a long, tiresome walk each way. A friend asked him why he went so far, and told him that there were plenty of others just as good nearer his home. ‘They may be as good for others, but not for me,’ was his reply. ‘Why not?’ she asked. ‘Because they love a fellow over there,’ he replied.”
