Devotional: ‘Step by Step You’ll Lead Me’

Standard

One of my favorite worship songs is an old song written by singer/songwriter Rich Mullins.

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You

I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step, You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Rich Mullins

Consider how Rich Mullin’s song goes along with Scripture –

Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand. NKJV

One of the great problems that many of us have is that sometimes we try to live life on our own. We view God as a backup plan in case our plan fails. Yet, the Bible teaches us that God wants to be the most important thing in our life, which means that He walks with us every step of the way. A perfect example of this is the life and ministry of our Savior.

John 5 tells us about a time when Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath. The religious leaders were upset and could not understand why a supposedly righteous man would do such a thing. When they questioned Jesus about His actions, He said-

John 5:17 … “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” 19 “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. NKJV

I find it amazing that Jesus said that He could do nothing of Himself, but only what the Father revealed to Him. In other words, ‘step by step’ His Father guided Him. With that in mind, consider what our Lord said to His disciples.

John 15:4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. NKJV

It is only by our abiding in Christ (walking with Him step by step) that we are able to do the things that please God. Jesus said that without Him, we can do nothing. But with Him, we can bear much fruit that will bring much glory to our Father.

God bless you brethren.
