Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left. (Isaiah 30:21)
One of the great blessings that comes from being a child of God is the promise of our Father’s guidance. Like a shepherd caring for his sheep, so the Lord has promised to lead His children.
Yet the Lord rarely shouts out His counsel. More often than not, it comes as a ‘still small voice.’ (1 Kings 19:12) Isaiah portrays the Lord as someone standing behind us, gently guiding us with words such as- “This is the way, walk in it…now to the right…now to the left.”
Consider this biblical example of God’s guidance.
Acts 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
Philip was a leader in the early church and a great man of God. One day the Lord told him to go to a certain road and wait there. As Philip stood along the road, he saw a chariot approaching. Then the Lord told him to approach the chariot. And as he did, he discovered a man reading the Bible and full of questions. Was all of this by simple chance? Of course not. It was God guiding Philip in order to use him in a miraculous way.
In order for Philip to hear God speak, he had to be very sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God, stresses that God’s divine guidance comes through a relationship with Him that is ‘real and personal’. The more intimate we are in our relationship is with the Lord, the more clearly we will be able to hear Him speak.
I hope that today’s devotional has sparked your interest concerning God’s guidance in your life. What does the Lord have to say to you today? In what miraculous way might He lead or use you? What chariot will He bring along your path in order for you to have the opportunity to tell someone about Jesus? What a blessing it is to know that as we go through this day, we will hear a still small voice saying, “This is the way, walk in it.”
