Often man-made material is used in the décor of buildings. (faux bricks, faux beams, faux columns) The function of these items is purely decorative and if any weight was placed upon them they would quickly crumble. Whereas fake material may look impressive to the eye, it provides no strength or support. With that thought in mind, consider this story that Jesus told about the spiritual foundation of men’s lives.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
It would be terrible enough if someone trusted in a plastic pillar to support a building, but how much more terrible it will be in the end for those who have trusted a plastic faith. James says, “Faith without works is dead and useless.” (see James 2:20, 26) In centuries past, some believed that the book of James should not be included in the Bible because it seemed to contradict Paul’s message of salvation by grace. Yet, James is saying nothing more than what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount. It is not enough to just say that we believe in Christ. The way we live our lives must verify it.
Perhaps the saddest truth in all the Bible is the realization that there will be some who will one day stand before God, fully expecting to enter into heaven, and yet hear the LORD say, “Depart from me…I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:23) Some of these individuals may have attended Sunday School since their childhood. Many will have belonged to a church. A few may even have been leaders in the church. Yet their relationship with God was no more genuine than a column made of cardboard.
What is the foundation of your relationship with God? The Bible says – “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11) If you have questions about your salvation and spiritual life, please contact me.
