Devotional: ‘Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul’

Standard

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come; buy wine and milk without money and without cost.  Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.”  (Isaiah 55:1-2)

Several years ago, as I was driving down the road, something rather funny occurred to me. As I looked around I saw all kinds of cars. There were big cars and small cars; new cars and old cars; nice looking cars and cars you wouldn’t want to be caught dead in. The funny thing that occurred to me was – “At some point in time, all of these cars were brand new, and someone purchased them, thinking that they had done a good thing!”

I’ve never owned a luxurious car. I’ve never had a Corvette, or a Porsche, or a Lamborghini. What’s more, I don’t expect to be getting one anytime soon. But even if I could make such an extravagant purchase, would it guarantee me joy and happiness? Would driving an expensive automobile or living in a mansion bring me lasting satisfaction?

Several years ago, Christian songwriter Lanny Wolfe wrote a gospel song entitled, “Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul.”  Here’s the chorus:

Only Jesus can satisfy your soul
And only He can change your heart – And make you whole
He’ll give you peace you never knew
Sweet love and joy and Heaven too
For only Jesus can satisfy your soul

It has been said that there is a void in every man’s soul that only God can fill. Scripture says that one day Jesus approached a woman at a well and asked her for a drink of water. (see John 4:1-30) Though Jesus was the one who asked the drink of water, He knew that she was the one with the greater thirst. For years she had been trying to quench an inner thirst with earthly relationships, when what she really longed for was a relationship with God.

The world will try to satisfy that longing in your soul
You may search the wide world over,
but you’ll be just as before
You’ll never find true satisfaction,
until you’ve found the Lord;
For only Jesus can satisfy your soul

Only Jesus can satisfy your soul
And only He can change your heart – And make you whole
He’ll give you peace you never knew
Sweet love and joy and Heaven too
For only Jesus can satisfy your soul

Dear friend, only Jesus can satisfy your soul.
