“Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.” (1 Chronicles 16:8-11)
Scripture teaches us that thankfulness should be a part of our Christian character. What are some of the things for which we should be thankful?
We Should Be Thankful For God’s Holy Character
“Glory in His holy name” Have you ever considered what it would be like if God was not holy? Even a brief study of the gods of the Greeks and the Romans reveal mythological creatures that were immoral, unjust and greedy for power. What if that was what God was really like? What if we were depending upon someone who was as unreliable as ourselves? Oh how we should be thankful that God is holy and just that His character will never change!
We Should Be Thankful For His Righteous Deeds
“Make known among the nations what he has done … tell of all his wonderful acts.” It has been said that the best remedy for worry is a spirit of thanksgiving. The Apostle Paul tells us, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.” (Philippians 4:6-7 NLT)
We Should Be Thankful That He Wants to Be Our Dearest Friend
“Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.” Life is full of difficulty. Not even the children of God are immune to trouble. Yet we can be thankful we will not have to face our troubles alone. Scripture encourages us to cast our every care upon God. (see 1 Peter 5:7)
We Should Be Thankful That His Well of Mercy Will Never Run Dry
“Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth. Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein. Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. (1 Chronicles 16:31-34)
