Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (Revelation 5:11-12)
Angels have always played a special role in God’s plan. According to the Bible, ten thousand times ten thousand angels are around His throne, continually giving Him praise and glory.
Scripture also teaches us that God uses angels in His ministry to men. God used an angel to announce the birth of Isaac, Samson, John the Baptist and even the Lord Jesus. We see also in scripture that God has used angels to warn His people of a coming disaster. It was an angel that told Abraham of the destruction of Sodom and it was an angel that warned Mary and Joseph to flee to Egypt shortly after the birth of Jesus. We find also in scripture that God has used angels to give special guidance and instruction. Abraham promised his servant Eliezer guidance from an angel when he was sent to search for a wife for Isaac. We see also in the Bible that it was also an angel that accompanied the children of Israel as they journeyed to the Promise Land.
We expect to see the work of angels whenever we read the Bible, but did you know that angels are involved in our lives today as well? The writer of Hebrews tells us that angels are “ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation.” (Hebrews 1:14)
Have I ever seen an angel? I’m not sure. There have been a few incidents in my life where I am inclined to believe so, but only God knows for sure. However, even if we don’t see God’s angels, the Bible tells us that they are all around us. Concerning the presence of angels we read these encouragement from the Bible- “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)
Psalm 34 is one of my most favorite portions of scripture in all the Bible. I read it often with people in the hospital. I especially love the verse that says, “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” (Psalm 34:7) Though we may fail to recognize their presence, we can be sure that they are all around us!
