Devotional: ‘Guardian Angels’

Standard

Imagine yourself driving down the road and as far as you can tell, there is no one else in your car with you; yet you are not alone. Of course there is the Holy Spirit who is with you, but perhaps there are also others as well. Scripture teaches us that God sends His angels to minister to us as His saints. (see Hebrews 1:14)

We read from the book of Psalms –

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.  They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.”  (Ps 91:11-12)

The Bible teaches us that there are an innumerable number of angels who exist both in heaven and on earth. What are angels? Who are angels? Where do angels come from? Where do they live? Do angels have supernatural power? Is there such a thing as a “guardian angel“?  These are but a few of the questions we will try to answer over the next several days.

First of all, what are angels?  Angels are not chubby little children, wistfully looking up into the sky.  Nor are angels the spirits of good people who have died and gone to heaven.  Angels are unique spiritual beings created by God and for His purposes.

Scripture teaches us we will witness the presence of angels in heaven. Yet, heaven is not the only place where angels are found. Throughout the Bible we see angels involved in the lives of men. The writer of Hebrews teaches us that angels are- “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.” (Hebrews 1:14) Do I believe that we have guardian angels? Yes, I do. As a matter of fact, our family has experienced the presence of angels in our lives.

Many years ago we were close to being involved in an auto accident. Cindy, our oldest daughter, was only a small child at the time and fastened in her safety seat. Almost as soon as the incident occurred, she asked us, “Who was that man?” We thought that she was referring to the person who has just pulled out in front of us. “We don’t know who was driving the car”, we told her. “No” she said, “who was the man beside my car door?” I can’t explain it, but Tammy and I both knew that she had seen an angel.

So are there invisible visitors with each of us right now? Only God knows for sure, but from what the Bible tells us about angels, I sure hope so. As I once heard the Rev. E.V. Hill say several years ago, the men of Zion are all about us.” Praise God that He has commissioned His angels to watch over us!
