Daniel 9:24 “A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy…”
God has decreed a time-period of 490 prophetic years for the nation of Israel. During this ‘seventy sets of seven’ at least two important things will happen:
1) Israel will receive Jesus as their Messiah and Savior
2) Israel will turn to God and be saved
According to God’s revelation, this process of bringing Israel to salvation will occur in two parts.
Phase 1 –The Anointed One Will Come and Be Killed
Daniel 9:25 Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes.
The Messiah Will Come
Seven sets of seven, plus sixty-two sets of seven, equals sixty-nine sets of seven. (7 + 62 = 69) God said that 69 sets of the seven year time-periods (483 years) would be fulfilled between the time when the Jews would be allowed to return and rebuild Jerusalem until the time when the Anointed One would come. Note – the title Messiah means ‘Anointed One.’
The Messiah Will Be Killed
God also revealed the Messiah would be put to death shortly after His coming. Daniel 9:26 “…the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing…” Though the prophecy of the Messiah’s death must have startled Daniel when he first learned it, we know that Christ’s death accomplished the most important thing in the entire history of mankind. Scripture says that ‘Christ (Messiah) died for our sins… (see 1 Corinthians 15:3-4) God sent His Anointed One to be our Savior.
Again I see that my space is running short and so we will need to return to this study again tomorrow. In closing, allow me to direct our attention to what Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians –
Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ… 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world … 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins…
What an amazing truth it is to know that before God created the world, He devised a plan for how He would save us. Join me again tomorrow as we continue this study.
