Devotional: ‘Is the World Out of Control?’

We live in a very difficult and desperate day. Often I hear people say, ‘The world is completely out of control.’ Is the world out of control?

In 1947 the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago established what many call “The Doomsday Clock.” Though this is not a real clock, it is a way of measuring how close humanity is to destroying itself by nuclear war. Currently the clock is set at three minutes till midnight. That is up two minutes from where it was in 2012. [1]

No one but God knows for sure what will happen and when. We read in scripture – “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose…’” (see Isaiah 46:9-10)

Consider what Daniel said to King Nebuchadnezzar.

“Then Daniel praised the God of heaven and said: ‘Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and removes them. . .’”  (Daniel 2:19-21)

Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that it is God who sets up kings and removes them. We read from the book of Proverbs – “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.” (Proverbs 21:10) Again we read from Proverbs – “The LORD has made everything for his own purposes, even the wicked for a day of disaster.” (Proverbs 16:4)

A deeper study of the rest of Daniel chapter 2 reveals that God has already determined which empires will rule the world and when. Though men are acting according to their own free will, God already knows how they will act and what will be the results. From our human perspective, the world often seems to be out of control; yet from God’s heavenly perspective, everything is moving according to His plan.

In closing I leave you with this word of encouragement concerning where the world is headed.

“…the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.” (Daniel 2:44)

There is a kingdom coming that will never be overthrown and will endure forever. Praise God I am a part of that kingdom!
