Devotional: ‘Always Seek God’s Guidance’

Standard

Proverbs 3:6 “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Jesus said that men should always pray and not lose heart.[1]  The Apostle Paul encourages us to pray without ceasing.[2] Peter tells us that we should always be alert and clear minded so that we can always be praying. [3] Prayer is our lifeline to heaven.

Today’s passage of scripture comes from the book of Proverbs. In this verse Solomon tells us to pray to God about everything. “Do not try to handle life on your own, but instead seek God’s guidance in everything.

As I write this devotional about the importance of prayer, a story from the book of Acts comes to my mind.

Acts 16:6 After the Holy Spirit prevented them from speaking the word in the province of Asia, they traveled through the region of Phrygia and Galatia. 7 And when they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit them. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9 During the night, Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and pleading with him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 As soon as Paul had seen the vision, we got ready to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. The Bible says that Paul and Silas wanted to take the gospel into a region known as Asia Minor which would have included the great city of Ephesus. But for some reason the Spirit stopped them. How the Spirit spoke to them we do not know, yet we recognize that they must have been very sensitive to Him in order for them to so easily discern His guidance.

One might think that God would not care where they went, just as long as they were faithful to preach the gospel. Yet the Lord knew exactly where, when, and how He could best use them. That very night the Lord revealed to Paul that they should go to a region known as Macedonia. As we continue reading in Acts 16 we see that as they entered into the city of Philippi, they discovered a group of ladies who were meeting regularly for prayer. [4] Though Paul and Silas thought that they should go into Asia Minor and sow the gospel seed, the Spirit knew that there was a field ready to be harvested in Macedonia.

It might seem unnecessary and perhaps even a bit silly for us to pray about everything, scripture tells us that it is always best. God has promised us that if we will acknowledge Him in everything we do, He will always give us His guidance.
