1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Jesus said – “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” As I consider 1 Corinthians 13, I see these three characteristics of Christ-like love:
1) It is Patient
The first characteristic of love is its patience. Paul tells us that Christ-like love does not quickly become irritable or angry with others. Instead, it demonstrates great patience. Why is this love so patient? It is patient because it is love. If we truly love someone, we will be willing to overlook many of their faults in order to help them. Peter writes – “…love conceals a multitude of sin.”
2) It is Pure
The second characteristic of love is its purity. Love finds no pleasure in the failures of others; even its enemies. Love does not sit back and wait for the opportunity to pounce on its enemies and condemn them for their sin. Love desires to focus upon what is true and honest. Love is always looking for something good in that other person.
3) It is Persistent
The third characteristic of love is its persistency. Paul tells us that love endures all things. Regardless of what happens, love keeps on loving. Consider the enduring love of God.
1 John 4:9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Perhaps the one characteristic of God that amazes me the most is His great love. I understand that He is all-wise and all-powerful. I have no doubt that He is holy and just. But what thrills me the most is that this wonderful God is also loving.
