Devotional: ‘The Lamb of God That Takes Away the Sin of the World’

Standard

This week we have been considering what it takes for us to become right with God. There are three major approaches that men have tried to use-

Approach #1 – Becoming Right by Always Doing What is Right

Approach #2 – Offer Up a Sacrifice For Our Sins

Approach #3 – Faith in God’s Perfect Sacrifice

Who was Jesus and what did He come to do? John the Baptist once said – “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

Why is Jesus the Lamb of God who is able to take away our sin?

1) Jesus is Able to Take Away Our Sin Because He is God

In order for Christ’s sacrifice to have meant something, He had to be perfect. One sinful man offering his life for another sinful man would accomplish nothing. Jesus had to be perfect. But who is perfect? Jesus said that only God is perfect [1], therefore Jesus had to be God in order to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

2) Jesus is Able to Take Away Our Sin Because He Became a Man

We read from the book of Philippians –

Philippians 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. NASB

The amazing thing about Jesus is that not only is He God, He also became a man. Through the virgin birth Jesus received a human body. While in the womb of Mary, He was clothed with humanity. This body was necessary so that by becoming a man, He could die as a man for the sins of mankind.

Jesus is the Lamb of God that came to take away the sin of the world. Have you chosen to receive Him as your Lord and Savior? If you need help, please contact me at: pastorterry@twinoaksbapt.org
