Devotional: ‘The Answer to Life’s Questions’

Isaiah 55:1 “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; ESV

I do not always understand why some people do what they do. Some behavior seems so bizarre to me that I just can’t comprehend it. Yet as my wife Tammy often reminds me, people sometimes do what they do because there is some need in their life and they are searching.

With that thought in mind, carefully consider once again what the Lord said through the prophet Isaiah. In this passage God is calling out to people who have a hunger and thirst in their soul. It was Augustine who once said, “You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless, until it rests in You.” Some have rephrased that statement to say – “There’s a God-shaped hole in each of us that only God can fill.”

That there would be a need in each of us for God should not surprise us. Consider these three important truths:

1) We Have Been Created in God’s Image (see Gen 1:26-27)

Many have tried to determine exactly what it means to be made in God’s image. Obviously we are not God, nor will we ever be. Yet as men and women, we have a link to God that no other part of creation does.

2) We Have Been Created For God’s Own Glory and Pleasure

Consider these two powerful passages of scripture:

Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. ESV

Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”  ESV

3) Our Entire Existence is Dependent Upon God’s Power and Presence

Acts 17:28 For in Him we live and move and have our being… ESV

There is a song that says – “I believe You are the only answer to life’s questions.” [1] What a wonderful and powerful truth that is. God is the only answer to our questions. He is the only water that will satisfy our soul. He is the only reason for our existence.
