Devotional: ‘Living Stones Being Formed into a Spiritual House’

Standard

1 Peter 2:4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone…”

The Bible is full of analogies and illustrations. No doubt the reason for that is because many of us are visual learners. Jesus had the ability to tell parables that were not only easy to visualize, but also to internalize. In today’s passage we see that Peter compares the church to a spiritual house. you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house…”

What does it take to build a great house?

Every Good Building Has a Good Foundation

Paul wrote – “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11) By calling Christ our foundation we are saying that only through faith in His sacrificial death can a person be sure of their salvation. Peter preached – “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Every Good Building Has a Good Design

1 Peter 2:6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone…”

A corner stone is a large stone placed at the main corner of a building. Although it helps to add strength and stability to the foundation, it is also used to guide the design. One resource says that all other stones will be set in reference to the cornerstone, thus determining the position of the entire structure. Jesus is the cornerstone of the church and the rest of our lives are built around Him.

Every Good Building is Built With Good Material

1 Peter 2:5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house…

It is important for us to note that whereas the word ‘stones’ is plural (referring to many stones), the word ‘house’ is singular (referring to only one house.) Many stones make one house.

It has always been a part of Christ’s design that the entire body of Christ work together. Paul wrote – “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.’ (Ephesians 4:16 NLT)
