Devotional: ‘That All the Earth May Know the Hand of the LORD is Mighty’

Joshua 3: 17 Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.

Joshua 4:1 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, 2 Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, 3 And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve  stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night. Many of you know that I use a lot of personal examples whenever I preach or teach. I don’t do so because I want to talk about myself or because I think that I am someone special. I tell you these stories, some of them over and over again, because I believe that these truths are real and here are some of the examples of how God has worked in my life.

God knew that His people would be facing some fierce enemies and therefore there would be many moments when they would be tempted to doubt or fear. To help them keep their eyes on Him, He had them build a special memorial.

Joshua 4:20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ 23 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.” ESV

I believe that there are three very important reasons why we need memorials in our lives:

1. Because we ourselves sometimes need a reminder

2. Because in the days ahead our children will need a record

3. Because the world around us needs a reality
