Devotional: ‘Humble Yourselves Before the Lord’

Ezekiel 1:22 Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads. 23 And under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another. And each creature had two wings covering its body. 24 And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings. 25 And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings.

26 And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. 27 And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. 28 Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face… ESV

One of the great problems of our day is that too many have lost their fear of God. Men often act as though God doesn’t exist; or if He does exist, He’s nothing to worry about. Yet the Bible tells us that ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.’ (Pr 9:10) All the knowledge in the world will profit us nothing, if we do not understand the importance of fearing God.

Many years ago I heard Adrian Rogers share what happened on the night he fully surrendered his life to Christ. According to Dr. Rogers, as he was walking home that night, he felt overwhelmed by the greatness of God. In prayer he cried out to God; but his prayer alone was not enough. He then got on his face before God; but that was not enough. He then dug a little hole in the ground and placed his nose in the hole; and in that humble state he tried to prayed. And even after all of that, he still did feel that he had humbled himself enough in order to adequately express God’s glory.

1 Chronicles 29:10 Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.” ESV
