None of us desires to be in poverty. We like it best when we have more than enough to meet all of our needs. Yet there is a time when poverty is good. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 5:3) In other words – Blessed are those who are begging for God’s kingdom.
What does it mean to be poor in spirit? First of all let us understand what it doesn’t mean. To be poor in spirit does not mean that we have little or no interest in spiritual things. It does not mean that we have no love for God. What then does it mean?
To be poor in spirit means that we are broken before God and in desperate need of His presence. It is the opposite of self-righteousness, self-sufficiency and pride. People who have little or no interest in spiritual things are not poor in spirit, but rather they are proud in spirit. The reason they are not hungry for God is because they think that they do not need God. In contrast, the person who is poor in spirit realizes that they need God more than anything else.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” God is searching for those who are poor in spirit. He desires to be found by them and to supply all their needs according to His riches in glory.
How desperate are you for God? Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The treasures of God’s kingdom are awaiting those who really need them.
