Devotional: ‘Life Sometimes Gets Harder Once We Decide to Follow Christ’

Standard

Often I have people say to me that life got harder once they made a decision to follow Christ. No doubt that is true and for several reasons.

1. WE’RE NOW SWIMMING AGAINST THE CURRENT

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.

2. WE’RE NOW A THREAT TO SATAN

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

3. WE’RE NOW MORE SENSITIVE TO SIN

Paul wrote – “I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.” (Acts 24:16 NIV) The more a Christian strives to keep their conscience clean, the more they will be aware of those things that can defile it.

4. WE’RE NOW ENROLLED IN GOD’S SCHOOL OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

James 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. NIV

In many ways, maturing as a believer is much like developing as an athlete. Every great athlete is born with a certain amount of God-given talent. However, in order for that talent to develop to a level that can be considered ‘world-class’, that athlete must endure many hours of rigorous training.

Does life get harder once we become a believer? In some ways yes and in other words no. Life will often seem harder because we are no longer a part of this world’s system of beliefs and values. Yet life can become easier because we now have the power of Christ living within us.
