Devotional: ‘We Know That He is Alive!’

Acts 1:3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

The Bible teaches us that Jesus did not immediately go to heaven after His resurrection. Scripture says that He spent 40 days here on earth with His disciples. As we saw in yesterday’s devotional, the Bible often uses the number 40 as a symbol of trial or examination. For 40 days Jesus allowed His disciples to thoroughly examine Him so that they might be completely convinced that He was alive. The phrase ‘infallible proofs’ literally means: {evidence that removes all doubt.} What kind of evidence could Jesus possibly give His disciples that would cause them to be confident? Consider the testimony of one of His disciples.

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. 1) Physical Evidence

Jesus made at least ten post-resurrection appearances before ascension and as much as three afterwards. On several occasions He ate food with them and on more than one occasion He allowed them to actually touch His body and examine the wounds made by His crucifixion. John says – “which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands…”

2) Spiritual Evidence

Jesus also gave His disciples spiritual evidence. The book of Acts says that He spoke to them “of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.” Each time Jesus met with His disciples, He opened the scriptures to them. Over and over again He showed them from scripture why it was biblically necessary for Him to suffer and to rise again. We might think that evidence from the Bible is not that important, however Peter tells us that biblical evidence is more trustworthy than even what we can experience with our physical senses. (see 1 Peter 1:19-21)

3) Emotional Evidence

Luke 24:50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. 51 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: 53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

A tremendous change had occurred in these men over the past 40 days. They began being fearful and hiding behind closed doors. But after the 40 days with Jesus, they were full of joy and worshiping Him openly in the temple. Though the world will never understand us, every true believer knows in their heart that their Savior is alive!
