Devotional: ‘Faith is the Victory’

1 John 5:14 …and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

When I was a boy we used to sing a song in church entitled – ‘Faith is the Victory!’ Perhaps you will remember these words:

On every hand the foe we find
Drawn up in dread array.
Let tents of ease be left behind,
And onward to the fray.
Salvation’s helmet on each head,
With truth all girt about,
The earth shall tremble ’neath our tread,
And echo with our shout.

Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory!
O glorious victory, that overcomes the world.

(John H. Yates, 1891)

As you study through Hebrews 11, you can find many who were able to sing the song of victory.

Hebrews 11:32 And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets– 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. ESV

Through faith, many men and women have done many mighty things for God. For instance- through faith Gideon took a group of 300 and defeated an army of over 100,000. Through faith, Samson, with only the jawbone of a donkey, slew over 1,000 men. Through faith, the shepherd boy David brought the great giant named Goliath down with only a stone and a sling. Through faith, Daniel spent a night in a hungry lion’s den and was not harmed. Through their faith, all these did something that was great. As a result of their great accomplishments, each was able to sing the song of victory. Consider this small a portion of the song of Moses after the Lord delivered them from the Egyptians.

Exodus 15:2 The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. 3 The LORD is a man of war; the LORD is his name. 4 “Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. 5 The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. 6 Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy. ESV

Do you have a song of victory that needs to be sung? If so, then sing it! Shout out the song of victory and bring glory to our great God!
