Devotional: ‘They Chose God Over the World’

Hebrews 11:2 Faith is the reason we remember great people who lived in the past. NCV

This week we are studying Hebrews 11. Many have called this passage – ‘God’s Heroes of Faith’, or ‘Faith’s Hall of Fame.’ So rich is this passage of scripture that a series of lessons could be done on just it alone. Yet for sake of time and space, I want to call to our attention to three important truths:

1) They Chose God Over the World
2) They Obeyed God in Whatever He Said
3) They Were Rewarded by God for Their Great Faith

1) They Chose God Over the World

Hebrews 11:4 It was by faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.

Hebrews 11:7 It was by faith that Noah heard God’s warnings about things he could not yet see. He obeyed God and built a large boat to save his family. By his faith, Noah showed that the world was wrong, and he became one of those who are made right with God…

Hebrews 11:8 It was by faith Abraham obeyed God’s call to go to another place God promised to give him. He left his own country, not knowing where he was to go. 9 It was by faith that he lived like a foreigner in the country God promised to give him…

Hebrews 11:24 It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of the king of Egypt’s daughter. 25 He chose to suffer with God’s people instead of enjoying sin for a short time…

Consider the pressure Abel must have faced as his brother, Cain, tried to argue why it was not necessary to offer to God a blood sacrifice. The Bible says – “And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.” (Gen 4:8) Surely if Cain became angry enough to slay his brother, he must have been angry enough to slander him. Yet Abel chose God over his brother, and even his own life.

Or consider the pressure Abraham must have faced as he walked away from all he had ever known and journeyed to a country where he had never been. I remember that when I quit my job and moved to Tennessee to prepare for the ministry, many tried to talk me out of it and some even said I was a fool. I’m sure that some of the same must have been said to Abraham. Yet Abraham chose God over other people’s opinions and even his own personal comfort.

Or consider also the pressure Moses must have faced when he first let it be known that he would rather be called a Jew than a son of Pharaoh. Moses chose God over both fame and fortune.

How did these individuals do this? Why did they do this? They did it because of their faith in God. Faith is the reason we remember great people who lived in the past.” If you and I want to become a part of God’s Heroes of Faith, we must choose Him over the world.
