Devotional: ‘Confidence to Live’

Standard

Each time I begin writing a new week’s worth of devotionals, I save them under some particular title. This week’s study has been filed under – ‘Confidence to Live.’ In a world full of difficulty and uncertainty, we need great confidence in order to effectively live for God. We need to believe that God is with us and that He will help us. Such confidence in our heavenly Father may be described as faith. As I recently read; FAITH IS THE DECISION TO TRUST GOD.

We read from the book of Hebrews – “Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.” (Hebrews 11:1 NCV)

We do not know what will happen in the future. We do not know what will happen tomorrow or the rest of this week. For that matter, we do not know what will happen today or even in the next moment. However, although we may not know what will happen in the future, we can still live with great confidence. As the old saying goes – “I may not know what tomorrow holds, but I know who holds tomorrow.”

God holds tomorrow, and today, and all of eternity in His hand. Consider this tremendous portion of scripture –

Isaiah 46:9 …for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure…

This does not mean that all of creation operates like a robot. Scripture teaches us that God does not cause men to sin. Men sin because they choose to obey their own lusts rather than the will of God. (see James 1:13-14; Matthew 23:37; Joshua 24:15) What this does mean is that everything God has willed to happen – will happen. God is in control. God is sovereign.

Therefore, as those who have chosen to trust in God, we can live with confidence in a world of great uncertainty. Though we don’t always know what will happen next, or even what is happening now, our confidence in God gives us a peace that passes all understanding.

Hebrews 11:1 Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it. 2 Faith is the reason we remember great people who lived in the past. NCV

Faith in God is the reason we remember great people of the past. May our faith be the reason people will remember us in the future.
