Devotional: ‘Be Ye Holy’ pt 3

1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

As we have been studying God’s call for us to be holy, we have seen that our holiness is accomplished in three phases: Past, Present and Future.

For the past two days we have considered phase one and three.

Phase One – Past Tense – Positional Holiness (see Hebrews 10:14)

Phase Three – Future Tense – Perfect Holiness (see 1 John 3:1-2)

Today we will step back and consider phase two.

Phase Two – Present Tense – Practical Holiness

Consider these words also from the Apostle Paul. 2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The word ‘perfecting’ in this verse means – accomplishing. When we receive Christ as our Savior, God sends His ‘Holy’ Spirit to live inside of us. The Spirit’s presence is to help us accomplish the holiness that God intends. Consider these words from the book of Ezekiel: Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. It is the Spirit that gives us the ability to live in a holy manner.

The Holy Spirit is present with every believer to equip him or her live holy. Yet not every believer lives holy. Not every believer yields to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Consider these words from Paul: Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. The Spirit will transform every believer who yields themselves to Him. He will place a holy desire within their heart and then He will equip them to live out this holy desire in their everyday living.
