Devotional: ‘Don’t Let the Darkness Get You Down’

Standard

One of the worst things about winter is that the days are shorter and the nights are longer. This is especially oppressive when it gets dark so early in the evenings. Recently I read that there are actually some people who get sick because of this increase of darkness. The remedy suggested was more time in the light during the daylight hours.

This is true not only physically, but spiritually as well. Jesus said –

John 3:19 “This, then, is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed. CSB

As the days grow spiritually darker, God’s light will become more and more offensive. Currently the Bible and the teachings of Christ are scorned by many in America. This is so because sinful men love darkness more than light. Jesus said that their deeds are evil and therefore they hate for them to be exposed. They would much rather be left in the darkness so that they might live as they please.

Though our world is increasingly becoming more and more evil, none of this has taken God by surprise. The Bible says that God knows where it all is headed and He knows how it all will end. And in His complete knowledge of all that is happening, God has chosen to place us here as His beacons of light. We read from the Bible –

Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. CSB

Though it may seem like we are completely out of place in this world (and we are), we must also remember that our Lord has us here for a purpose.  He is not yet ready to bring it all to an end. He still wants His light to shine because He knows that there are still some who will come to the truth and be saved.

Don’t try to take the world on your shoulders and solve all of its problems. You can’t. Instead, focus on being a child of light. Let Christ live through you each and every day so that men will see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Be of good cheer. The Kingdom of Light has already overcome the kingdom of darkness. We are on the winning team!
