Devotional: ‘Humbly Accept God’s Message’

So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.  For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.  You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.  But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.  (James 1:21-25)

Would I be going too far out on a limb to say that it is impossible to live a Christ-honoring life without maintaining a spirit of humility?  A person who claims to walk with the Lord, yet fails to demonstrate humility, is only fooling themselves.  Humility is necessary for every area of our Christian walk and perhaps there is no place where it is more needed than with our reception of the Word of God. ”…humbly accept the word God…”

Let me suggest a few reasons why we must humbly accept the Word of God.

First of all, it must be accepted with humility because of its source. Scan through the Bible and you will find the phrase – “Thus saith the LORD” used over 400 times.  Add to that others like: ‘God said’ and ‘the word of the Lord’ and you are now up into the hundreds, if not a thousand or more references.  Isn’t it amazing; although scripture is thousands of years old, it as much alive and active today as it was the moment God first moved the prophet’s pen.  Make no mistake, when we read the Word of God, we are hearing a word from God.

Secondly, it must be accepted with humility because of its significance. What is the Bible?

It’s God communicating His will to mankind.
It’s the infinite sharing His wisdom with the finite.
It’s the Creator speaking to the creation.
It’s truth revealed that never needed to be developed nor discovered.
It’s water to satisfy our deepest thirst and bread to feed our greatest hunger.
It’s a light to light our pathway and a scalpel that performs spiritual surgery.

Recently I read that the Bible continues to be the #1 best-seller each and every year with an estimated 1 million copies printed every year.  No other book ever written can be compared to the Word of God.

In closing let me say, it must be accepted with humility because of its saving power. James tells us –...humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” In the Bible we will find the truth about our sin and God’s plan of salvation.

When you consider the source of scripture, the significance of scripture and the saving power of scripture, no wonder Jesus said,

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

No one can truly know God nor walk with God without a humble acceptance of His Word.
