Devotional: ‘The Gift of Miracles’

This week we have taken a look at the Sign Gifts. These Gifts were given for the purpose of confirming the gospel message and messenger. Note what scripture says –

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

How the Lord used signs and miracles as a means of confirmation can clearly be seen in an episode from Acts 15.

Acts 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. 6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

How did God bear witness that Gentiles could be saved by grace and receive the Holy Spirit? He caused them to speak in tongues. (see Acts 10:1-11:18) Miraculous Spiritual Gifts are Sign Gifts used for confirmation.

12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

Note that it was once again through miracles and wonders that God confirmed the gospel message. The Sign Gifts include: Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, Healings, and Miracles.

Much more could be said about Spiritual Gifts and if you are interested in further study, I have available resources. In conclusion I would also like to encourage you to take a Spiritual Gifts Inventory that will help you better understand which Gifts the Lord has given to you. There are two ways that you can take this inventory:

In addition, you may want to take a Personality / Temperament Test. For a description of the four temperaments click here. I believe that our spiritual gift often goes hand in hand with our personality and temperament. * NOTE: These are suggested resources outside of my blog and therefore I do not necessarily endorse all of their comments or opinions.
