Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the LORD. Live as children of light.
The difference between a Christian and non-Christian is like night and day. Christians are children of the light and non-Christians are children of the darkness.
Paul did not say that we were in darkness – he said that we were darkness. Spiritual darkness was a part of our fallen nature. We were prisoners in a kingdom of darkness and had no strength of our own to escape. Later in the book of Ephesians, Paul describes Satan and his demons as the ‘rulers of the darkness.’
In contrast to this we learn from scripture that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. God has no fellowship with darkness. No wonder hell is described as a place of ‘outer darkness.’ The darkness in men’s life will cause them to be separated from God forever.
“But now you are light in the Lord.” Once we were darkness, but now we are light! During His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said –
Mt 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
As I said at the beginning of this lesson – the difference between a Christian and non-Christian is like night and day. Christians are no longer children of the darkness, but instead – children of the light! Therefore the question we should all be asking ourselves is – ‘Is the light of God shining through me? Does my life have a glow about it that guides others to Christ?’
