Devotional: ‘A Life Filled With Love’

Standard

Ephesians 5:1 Follow God’s example in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins.

This morning I had to pray and ask the Lord to forgive me for failing to have a Christ-like spirit towards others. It seems that everywhere I went yesterday, the person in front of me was driving 10 miles an hour under the speed-limit. Not only did their driving irritate me, at times I actually found myself getting angry with some of them.

The Bible says – Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ.” How much better life would be if only we could learn to do just that.

Paul gives us two reasons why we should walk in love.

1 – We are a child of God.

Sometimes children misbehave because of the example their parents set before them. Parents who are rude, critical and unloving, often produce children who are the same. Yet as the children of God, we cannot blame our sinfulness on our heavenly Father. The Bible teaches us that love is a part of God’s divine nature and therefore, as His children, it should be a part of our new nature as well.

We read in the book of Galatians –

Galatians 5:16 So I advise you to live according to your new life in the Holy Spirit. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The old sinful nature loves to do evil, which is just opposite from what the Holy Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are opposite from what the sinful nature desires.

19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, … hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger …

22 But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience …

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 If we are living now by the Holy Spirit, let us follow the Holy Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

The Holy Spirit became a part of our lives the moment we received Christ as our Savior. We were born-again by the Spirit and from that point on He became our constant companion. The purpose of the Spirit’s presence is to empower us to live the Christian life.

To walk in the Spirit means to live in constant communication with Him and to allow Him to guide us throughout each day. That includes even the moments when we are driving a car!

2 – We have been loved.

Paul gives us a second reason why we should walk in love – ‘We have been loved.”

Consider these words from our Lord –

John 15:12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

How much have we been loved? Christ laid down His life for us. We read  in the book of Romans –

Romans 5:6 …when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. That’s unconditional love and that’s the kind of love God wants us as His children to have for others.

I have told you this so that my joy may be in you
and that your joy may be complete.
My command is this:
Love each other as I have loved you.
John 15:11-12
