Devotional: ‘God’s Assistance or Resistance?’

Standard

Few things in life can cause God to resist us more than pride, and few things cause Him to assist us more than humility. In order to receive the fullness of God’s blessings, we must make sure that we walk in humility. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.  Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. (1 Peter 5:5-6)

It was pride that caused the angel Lucifer to become Satan. It was pride that stirred him to place himself against his Creator. It was pride that he used to tempt Eve. And it is pride that causes us to do many of the sinful things we do. Underlying much of our anger, jealousy, lust and envy is the issue of pride.

Pride is a terrible sin and it causes God to resist those who are controlled by it. Literally the word ‘resist’ means – {to stand in opposition.} Pride not only causes God to remove His hand of blessing, it also causes Him to act against us.

Opposite of pride is humility. To the humble God promises to bestow His grace and favor. Those who will voluntarily humble themselves, both before God and men, will be strengthen and exalted at a proper time.

You might say that much of what happens in our lives is the result of either pride or humility. Either God is strengthening us in our humility or He is resisting us in our pride. Which is it with you?
