Devotional: ‘The Power of a Pure Heart’

Psalm 126:1 Vindicate me, Lord, because I have lived with integrity and have trusted in the Lord without wavering. 2 Test me, Lord, and try me; examine my heart and mind. 3 For Your faithful love is before my eyes, and I live by Your truth. 4 I do not sit with the worthless or associate with hypocrites. 5 I hate a crowd of evildoers, and I do not sit with the wicked. 6 I wash my hands in innocence and go around Your altar, Lord, 7 raising my voice in thanksgiving and telling about Your wonderful works. 8 Lord, I love the house where You dwell, the place where Your glory resides. 9 Do not destroy me along with sinners, or my life along with men of bloodshed 10 in whose hands are evil schemes, and whose right hands are filled with bribes. 11 But I live with integrity; redeem me and be gracious to me. 12 My foot stands on level ground; I will praise the Lord in the assemblies. The Bible does not tell us what the occasion was that caused David to write this psalm. Perhaps it was at the time when Saul hunted for his life. Perhaps it was during the day when his son Absalom was trying to overthrow him and take the throne. Regardless of what the event was, it caused David to cry out to God for help.

The part I would like to call our attention to is the power of David’s pure heart.

  • Vs. 1 – Vindicate me, Lord, because I have lived with integrity and have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
  • Vs. 6 I wash my hands in innocence…
  • Vs. 8 Lord, I love the house where You dwell…
  • Vs. 11 But I live with integrity; redeem me and be gracious to me.

This is not to say that David deserved God’s favor. All of God’s blessings are because of His grace. Yet when a believer lives with spiritual integrity, there is a power and strength in their prayers that might not otherwise be there. A guilty conscience is a condemning conscience, and a condemning conscience robs us of our confidence before the throne of God.

But what if we have sin in our lives? Can we ever have confidence before God again? Not as long as we hold onto our sin. But if we will confess our sin, God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

Strive to live each day in fellowship with God and you will have great confidence during your times of trouble.

Vs. 12 My foot stands on level ground; I will praise the Lord in the assemblies.
